Jim LaRoy Galyen (84), passed away peacefully at home in Baker City, on September 5, 2023. He was born February 19, 1939, in Ontario, Oregon to Elmer and Bernice Galyen (Schumacher).
Jim graduated from Ontario High School in 1957. In 1959, He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Tschirgi, in Fruitland, Idaho. Together they had six children.
Jim worked for the state for 14 years, which eventually led him to Baker City. After his time with the state, he started a 25-year-long career working for the City of Baker City as the Street Supervisor. He retired in 1998.
Jim was an active member of his church, Agape Christian Center, and served as an elder for many years. He was a volunteer for Baker County Sheriff's Search and Rescue. He enjoyed the outdoors: Hunting, fishing, boating, water-skiing, and camping. Jim always looked forward to family camping trips and reuniting with extended family.
He built a small, hobby farm outside Baker. During the 1980s, he and his family operated a small dairy there. After retirement, he raised draft horses.
Jim is survived by his wife, Peggy Galyen, his three sons, Tony Galyen, Terry Galyen, and Mark Galyen, his daughters, Angela Theriault and Christina White, his brother Ken Galyen, and his sister Shari Cornell. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marlene McCullough, his brother Gary Galyen, and his daughter Deborah Galyen.
A funeral service will be held for Jim on September 16, 2023, at 11:00 at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel in Baker City, Oregon. A Potluck reception will follow the service.
