Lloyd L. Evans passed away on May 14, 2019, at his home in Baker City. His funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the Baker City VFW. Interment will be at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, May 20, 2019 at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Lloyd was born October 21, 1929 in Baker City, Oregon to Lloyd A. and Clara M. Wainsburg Evans.
He attended grade schools in Baker, Condon, Canyon City, and John Day, Oregon. He attended Baker High School for one year and then graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1947. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to the University of Portland which was the alma mater of his beloved coach Father Stone.
He married Ida Sue Taylor in 1947 and they had a daughter, Diana. A 1950 marriage to Ramona (Dolly) Hendriksen produced two daughters, Linda and Eileen.
He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1951 for four years during the Korean War. He was stationed at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA and always felt fortunate to have attended training at the University of Connecticut.
In February 1956 he went to work for Ellingson Lumber Company at Izee, Oregon and 3 1/2 years later moved to Unity where he managed the mill for Ellingson for 17 years. In 1968 he married Myrna Reinhart and they moved to Baker City and built a home in 1975. He continued to work for Ellingson Lumber Company and retired in 1992 after nearly 37 years.
Over the years he was active in many local and State endeavors. He was past master of the Unity Grange, chairman of the Unity Community Hall Boards of Directors, served for eight years on the Travel Advisory Committee of the Oregon Transportation Commission, was a member and chairman of the Baker County Parks and Recreation Committee for fifteen years, was involved with the Baker County Community Chest, was a member and chairman of the Baker City Golf Board for more than four years, was a lifetime member of the Baker City Golf Course and the Baker Elks Lodge #338, and a member of Amvets Post #1874 of Baker City.
Lloyd was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer. His love of basketball carried over into adulthood and he spent many years playing on town teams both at Unity and Baker City and enjoyed participating in fund raisers like donkey basketball and the women’s version of the Harlem Globetrotters. Lloyd and Myrna both loved travelling and visited Mexico, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, and Panama, in addition to many trips to southwestern states and a cruise on the Mississippi River. He loved Eastern Oregon and spent endless hours camping and exploring the Blue Mountains, the desert country, and the Snake River area. Another passion was golf and although most of his golfing was on the Baker City Course, he also enjoyed travelling to other courses to play social golf with other golfing couples and played in lots of men's tournaments.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Myrna; daughters Diana York and her husband, Paul, of La Grande; Linda Wentworth and her husband, Gary, of Baker City; Eileen Lewis of Oregon City; brother Allen Evans and his wife, Anita, of Salem; sister Diana Manning of Salem; brother Charles Wilson and his wife, Jackie of Baker City; sisters-in law Patricia Reinhart and Cheri Reinhart, brother-in-law Ronald Reinhart and his wife, Darlene of the Weston/Athena area; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
