James R. Sherman

July 19, 1945 ~ February 7, 2018 (age 72)

James R. Sherman, 72, lifelong resident of Baker City, passed away at his home on February 7, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on March 3, 2018 beginning at 11:00 AM at the Elkhorn Baptist Church in Baker City, Oregon with Pastor Tim Fisher officiating.  Following the service, a reception will be held at Coles Tribute Center located at 1950 Place St., Baker City, Oregon.

Jim was born on July 19, 1945 in Baker City, Oregon to Alvin and Dorothy (Stewart) Sherman.

Jim was in the Army and served in Vietnam. Upon returning from the service, he went to work for the lumber mill. When the lumber mill closed, he spent the rest of his career as circulation manager at the Baker City Herald. He retired from the Baker City Herald after working there for 30 years. He was well known for being honest and fair to everyone. Paper carriers were always thankful for the chances he gave them and for believing that they could do a good job. Jim gave support, encouragement and daily affirmation of work well done and sent many youth into successful work careers.

Jim and Joan were married for 52 years and had three children, five granddaughters and one great grandson.

Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia Joan Sherman of Baker City, Oregon; his three children: James Daniel Sherman of Loveland, Colorado, Eric Wayne Sherman of Baker City, Oregon, and Tanya Jean Handy of Baker City, Oregon; his five grandchildren: Audrey, Cailan Nicole, Kenzie Renea, Dailon Joan and Jera LeNay; and his great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Dorothy (Stewart) Sherman and his sister Pamela Lee Sherman.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s honor to the Elkhorn Baptist Church or the Wounded Warriors Program through Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel at 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR  97814.
