James Edgar Newman, age 86, of Haines, Oregon passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018 in La Grande, Oregon.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Haines United Methodist Church in Haines, Oregon with Sally Wiens officiating the service. Following the service, a potluck gathering will be held in the fellowship hall.
James was born on October 6, 1931 in North Powder, Oregon to James and Lena (Gorham) Newman. He attended North Powder High School and graduated in 1949. In 1957, James graduated from Oregon State College.
He was an Engineer in the United States Navy and was on the USS Luzon. While in the Navy, he worked as an HVAC Repair Engineer. He also worked for Soil Conservation and the Department of Agriculture. After he retired, he worked as a farmer in Muddy Creek and Wolf Creek.
On July 20, 1952 James married Elsie Donna Loennig at the Baker Methodist Church. He enjoyed bee keeping, woodworking, growing blueberries, building and fixing things, especially at the cabin at Anthony Lakes, family gatherings and being a workaholic in general. He was a member of the Haines Methodist Church, Crazy 8 Square Dancing, Anthony Lakes Homeowners Association and he helped build the original Rock Garden poma lift and ran it the first year.
James’ many accomplishments include building homes, the cabin, Canyon City Condon and many remodels. He was also the recipient of a Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
James is survived by his daughter Rebecca Neys and her husband Joe of St. Paul, Oregon; daughter Angela Sherer and her husband Bob of La Grande, Oregon; son Douglas Newman and his wife Cynthia of Baker City, Oregon; daughter Kathleen Von Striver of Oregon City, Oregon; brother Kerry Newman of Modesto, California; and sister Marda Bloom of Baker City, Oregon. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lena and James Newman; his wife, Elsie Newman; his grandson, Gregory Von Striver; his daughter, Cynthia Diane Worcester; and his son, Eric Scott Newman.
