Alice May Cantrell, age 91, passed away on November 21, 2018, in Aloha, Oregon. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Baker City with Bishop Tom Isaacson officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Grandview Cemetery, 601 S. 20th Street, La Grande, Oregon.
Alice May Weimer was born on March 27, 1927, in Cove, Oregon to Jonas and Texy Weimer, and grew up in Hilgard, Oregon. She met the love of her life, Jerry Cantrell in Junior High School and they were married the day after their High School graduation in 1945. They were happily married for 70 years.
They soon moved to Portland, Oregon where Jerry worked in the shipyards for several years before moving back to the La Grande area to run the family-owned 5 POINTS AUTO CAMP near Hilgard, selling groceries, gasoline and lodging until being bought out by the state for the new freeway.
The family moved to Haines in 1958, where they ranched for many years. She also worked at the Haines Telephone Company, the Haines library and as secretary for Haines elementary and North Baker Elementary schools as well as being an Avon representative for many years. She liked to be busy.
She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved the church and serving others.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Jerry in 2015 and leaves behind their children; Mike, Tony (Debbie) and Kathy Rogers (Marlin), 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and many friends and family who felt and knew her kindness.
